Zachary Spontak, violin

Zachary Spontak, named Young Alaskan Artist in 2015, is an active performing musician. Called a “natural leader” by Casa Magazine, Zachary has collaborated in performances with Itzhak Perlman, Roger Tapping, Eduard Zilberkant, and Desmond Hoebig, among many others. In addition to being a three-time winner of the Fairbanks Symphony Concerto Competition, he won First Place at the Skokie Valley Symphony Concerto Competition in Chicago and the Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition in California. He is also a Gold Medal winner in the Junior Division of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Zachary received an Audience Prize for a performance in Moritzburg, Germany. A review of the concert said he plays with “a supple tone and lively communication” (Dresdener Neueste Nachrichten).

Zachary has performed in great orchestras, including a stint in the Houston Symphony. He recently appeared as concertmaster with the Cantata Buenos Aires at their Christmas Gala. He has also appeared on radio programs such as KUAC’s “Alaska Live” and NPR’s “From the Top”, and television programs in the United States, Germany, and Argentina.

Zachary has attended many music festivals, including the Perlman Music Program, Moritzburg Festival Academy (Germany), Astona-International (Switzerland), the Aspen Music Festival, and the Music Academy of the West. Zachary joined the Iowa Great Lakes Music Festival in summer of 2015 as artist-faculty, and is elated to join the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival this year.

Past teachers include Paul Kantor, Roland and Almita Vamos, Gail Johansen, and Jean Krause. He studied chamber music with Robert Mann, Itzhak Perlman, Peter Salaff, Roger Tapping, Donald Weilerstein, Desmond Hoebig, Kathleen Butler-Hopkins, and the Cavani Quartet. Zachary plays a 2012 David Burgess violin, graciously loaned from the Virtu Foundation.

Apart from music, Zach enjoys hiking, flying airplanes, and spending time with friends and family.
